Hi I just updated to a new computer. Running Windows 10. My version of Office is 2007 and the place I got the computer from said I should probably upgrade to a newer version 10 or newer. He also suggested trying LibreOffice as a free alternative. Well LibreOffice does seem to work with MS Office files and I would be happy with it if Jaws worked with it but it doesn't seem to work with it at all. Note I'm currently running Jaws 17 as I let my Jaws upgrade discontinue. Any suggestions on a word program that will let me use my current Office files? I know I should and need to upgrade Jaws and I am planning on doing so soon, but I do need to access my dox and files from MS Office before I do. also what Word type program does every one use? I just assume that MS Office is the standerd everyone does use. If there is another that works better with a screen reader I'd not mind hearing about it.
Hi, you better off upgrade me word to at least 2013 or later. I don’t think jaws 17 is an
issue, but of course, to get the most out of your computer, and most out of windows 10, it
will be preferable for you to run jaws 18 and also the latest version of office.
Well I'm also having a problem with Thunderbird Jaws reads everything eccept the listview that shows the messages exsample when I tab over from the inbox jaws says "filter these messages edit" witch it didn't say on my old computer. I'll arrow down to read the messege listview and Jaws doesn't read it. I have to tab over to hear where the message is from. I'm guessing this is a Jaws 17 issue. I hate upgrading seems like I have to relearn how to set up just about everything. This didn't bother me when I was younger but the older I get the more I just want stuff to work. Any suggestions on where to get MS Office?
Get MS Office directly from MicroSoft.
If you are just looking for a word processor, and not the other things that come with Microsoft office, outlook, power point, etc, I'd suggester jart. It works well with jaws, and according to a friend who uses windows ten, it supports jart very nicely.
Well upgrading JAWS helped with Thunderbird everything works now on it. I haven't put Jaws 2018 on my computer with LibreOffice yet but will soon and will report ifthat fixes that problem as well
Nope didn't help with LibreOffice. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get MS Office.
Well I put the Office 2007 on and truthfully it works just fine. Haven't had any problems at all. Mainly have used word.
I'm currently using Word 2010 on Windows 10 with JAWS 17. Works quite well, aside from those damned ribbons which are still far less intuitive than menu bars even with all the improvements.
It work, but you'll find improvements in the latest office.
Don't buy it subscribe.
For a single machine, it cost about $5 per month and you get all updates so no more purchasing an expensive softwear package that will lag behind after a couple years.
If you are trading documents and such from others that use more recent versions, that's were you'll find upgrading is best.
If you just do things on your own, you're good.
Jaws 18 works well, but 2018 is even better still.
Yes, I know.
You'll find you'll not have a learning curve like you thing. Microsoft has added things, but kept the operation concept same.
Hope this helps in your deciding.
Too bad the damn JAWS upgrades are so bloody expensive. Think I was quoted around $400 for the next two versions from 17. I could handle maybe $100 every couple years, but this is re-frickin-damn-diculous. Even more re-frickin-damn-diculous because I can't just do the 2017 thing and purchase an SMA through Freedom Scientific like a normal person. I live in Canada where we have to go through some random third party distributor like it's a damn pimp whoring out other people's software. Plus the Canadian dollar still sucks giant dinosaur balls.
Canada does upgrade you free when necessary. We don't have that here unless you're in schoolor signed up for some kind of program.
Yeah the Jaws upgrates get real costly real fast if you don't keep up with the upgrade plan. Example if you have JAWS 16 and now want to upgrade you will still have to pay for 17 18 and 2018 then pay for the next upgrade. If you had kept up with the upgrade program witch is about a payment every 2 years you'd have paid about half of the cost. As for Windows Office 365 if your someone who has to have the newest version, I guess it is the way to go. Not something I'd pay for though.
I do Jaws. I know we've got alternatives such as NVDA, but I have found FS might be slower releasing an update for something, but when they do, it usually works well.
I use my computers for so much in the day to day life cycle, its just worth it to me.
Everything updates, even something as simply as your bank might get unusable without.
Office, I'm not so worried about, but do the subscription.
This allows me to share it with up to 5 others, so that is cost effective. 5 people keep current for $10 per month or if I pay yearly, $99. Not bad at all.
I receive a TB of cloud storage, and I can use my personal part of the subscription on up to 5 computers and 5 of my portable devices.
Each member can do same.
Now, if I collected $2 from each of them every month?
Laughing.
I don't, but still. Its worth it for me.
I've forgotten. Each member also receives 60 minutes of world wide Skype calling.
Say you've just met this hot girl in a chat room or dating site who lives in South Africa.
She says she'd been using a friends computer to email and chat with you, so can't add anything to it to talk by voice.
You just say, fine, give me your cellular number.
That way you can learn Jamie is really a James, and it doesn't cost you a dime.
Laughing.
I like that last example. Very true to life these days. I work in a bank and the amount of "romance" fraud we see is disturbing. I didn't know you got a terrabite of storage with the 360 subscription. Might be worth a look. Then again, I have only one device I use. Though I guess my wife's computer could use it, and my Ipad. Though text editing on an ipad is the one major area I find IOS severely lacking.
Doesn't matter. You can split it between Mac, or Windows. Phones and tablets.
Can you tell I'm sold on this idea?
I didn't think I'd be and figured after a couple months, I'd probably quit and get a box version, but I'm still subscribing after a long time.
Since I guess version 2013.
I'm also a JAWS guy I've been using it since 99 or something like that. I think my first version was 3. I somehow forgot to pay for the upgrade a few years ago and found that wasn't a very costly way to keep up with JAWS. It is well worth getting the discount and pre paying on the upgrade program. However, for me the cost for the Office yearly program just doesn't make since.
